A neighborhood in Allentown PA has been devastated by a gas line explosion. The explosion is already known to have killed one person and five more are missing. Eight homes have been destroyed, 30 damaged, and 1oo’s of people had to be evacuated while there was a risk of a secondary explosion.
According to the Department of Energy Management, it is safe for people to return to their homes. The line has been capped and for now there is no further threat.
Could this have been prevented? Were there any warning signs? Had the gas leak been reported or was it so sudden that nothing could be done to prevent this? The investigation has only just begun and answers to these questions may not be known for days or weeks.
