WARNING: Stop Using Generation 2 Worldwide SafetyCraft Cribs

On February 3, 2011 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a Warning regarding Generation 2 Worldwide “SafetyCraft” brand drop-side cribs due to a risk of strangulation, suffocation, injuries and death. The warning includes both the full-size and portable drop-side cribs. These cribs are known to be used in both homes and childcare facilities. The danger is that the hardware on these cribs can break causing the drop side of the crib to become detached. This can result in serious injuries and even death. According to the CPSC, this is not a problem that you should attempt to fix. If you determine that you have one of these cribs you should stop using it immediately.

The CPSC has indicated that you can identify these cribs by trying to locate the word “SafetyCraft” on the cribs headboard or footboard. According to the CPSC, the product labels may list Indonesia or Dothan, Alabama as the manufacturing location. If you determine, or even suspect, that you are in possession of one of these cribs you need to discontinue using it immediately. The bad news is that this does not appear to be a recall where you can obtain parts to fix the defect or return the crib to the manufacturer. The manufacturer of these cribs, Generation 2 Worldwide, went out of business in 2005. That makes this situation especially tricky as the CPSC has had a difficult time even determining where these cribs were sold.

This warning is only one of the numerous drop-side crib recalls we have seen in recent years. If you are currently using a drop side crib please make sure it is not part of a recall. Also, the CPSC recommends that you never use a crib that has any type of broken, loose or missing parts and always double check the crib to make sure that the hardware is properly tightened.
