Two people died as a result of motorcycle accident injuries sustained during a Mesa charity event on Saturday March 28.
The motorcycle driver, 52-year-old Al Barela and the passenger, his 37 year-old wife Samantha Barela were taking part in an Olympic torch ride for the Special Olympics when Barela pulled into an intersection during a red light and crashed into a car.
The 16th Annual Torch Ride was one of many events held during the Arizona Bike Week and it was one of several accidents reported. The Scottsdale Police Department has attributed at least seven auto aaccidents to Arizona Bike Week, reported AZ Central.
“We’ve had a lot of accidents this week on freeways surrounding Scottsdale, involving motorcycles,” said Scottsdale Police Department Sgt. Ben Hoster.
The driver of the other car was not hurt. Unfortunately neither Barela nor his wife was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred.
Motorcycle crashes can be violent for the rider who does not have the same protective metal surrounding them as the driver of a car or truck.
