The number one auto maker recalled 2.17 million U.S. vehicles as requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. is reminiscent of the original 2009 recall, as the problem lies with faulty accelerator pedals that could become entrapped in floor mats or jammed in the driver’s side carpeting.

This recall affects the following vehicles:

4Runner SUV

Rav 4 SUV

Lexus LX570, RX 330, 350, and 400H

Highlander SUV

GS 300

GS350

Today’s recall brings Toyota to the total of 14 million vehicles recalled globally since 2009 to address similar gas pedal problems, as well as various other safety malfunctions. As a result of the recalls, Toyota has paid the U.S. government a record $48.8 million in fines.

On a positive note, Ford Sales are up over 13%. Once flocking to the Japanese cars, it appears more Americans are steering away from foreign vehicles and choosing to buy domestic vehicles. Could Toyota’s misfortune be just what the United States needs to rebound the economy?
